Kindle Paperwhite 13th generation: what Amazon announced
The wait is over. On 1 October 2026 Amazon announced a redesigned Kindle lineup, and a new Kindle Paperwhite is part of it. Amazon calls it thinner and lighter than the previous model, with the largest and highest-contrast display it has put in a Paperwhite, waterproofing, an adjustable warm light, and up to 12 weeks of battery on a charge. The standard model is $199.99 with 16 GB of storage in Graphite.
The Signature Edition is back too, at $249.99. It adds an aluminum back, 32 GB of storage, an auto-adjusting front light, charging through pogo pins on a dock, and double tap to turn pages, and it comes in Graphite or Seaglass Green. Pre-orders open on a rolling basis by region, and Good e-Reader reports both versions ship on 28 October 2026 with a 7-inch screen at 300 PPI.

The price is the part most launch coverage skips past. When we checked Amazon’s own pages in July 2026, the 2024 Paperwhite listed at $159.99 and its Signature Edition at $199.99. The new pair start at $199.99 and $249.99. The rest of the line moved the same way: the base Kindle went from $109.99 to $149.99, and the Colorsoft Signature Edition from $279.99 to $319.99.

The naming
Is this the 13th generation Paperwhite?
A lot of the search traffic here uses a phrase Amazon has never printed. Amazon does not number its Kindles: there is no “12th generation” or “13th generation” on any box, product page or spec sheet it publishes, and the October 2026 announcement keeps to that. The numbers are an enthusiast convention, tracked on sites like Wikipedia by counting hardware revisions back to the first Kindle in 2007.
By that count the 2024 Paperwhite was the 12th generation, so the October 2026 model is the one the “13th generation” label was waiting for. It is a fair name to search by. Just do not expect to find it on Amazon’s listing, where it is simply the Kindle Paperwhite, and check the release year when you buy, because the 2024 and 2026 models share a name and a screen size.
What changed
What the new Paperwhite actually changes
Most of the change is in how the screen is built. Amazon rebuilt the whole lineup around what it calls a reverse stack display, which lets the screen sit flush with the front of the device instead of below a raised border. On the Paperwhite that comes with an oxide thin-film transistor backplane, which is where Amazon’s contrast claim comes from: deeper blacks and crisper text, in sunlight or under the covers. The body color now wraps from the back onto the front, which is a design change, not a reading one.
What has not changed matters just as much. It is still a 7-inch, 300 PPI, black-and-white reader, still waterproof, and still has no pen. If you wanted color, that is the Colorsoft, now $289.99 for the standard model. If you wanted to write on the page, that is the Scribe, which this announcement did not touch.
The accessories are where the Signature Edition earns its extra $50. Amazon’s new Page-Turn Cover ($79.99) adds physical page-turn buttons through the pogo pins, and the Charging Dock ($59.99) holds the device upright while it charges. Both work only with the Paperwhite and Colorsoft Signature Editions. The one accessory that works with the standard model is Kindle Click, a $34.99 Bluetooth page-turn remote that pairs with any Kindle from 2024 or later. Demand outran stock on that one: Good e-Reader reports day-one orders ship on 11 November 2026 and many later orders have slipped to March 2027.

The open question
The battery question the announcement skipped
Before the launch, the strongest reason to expect a new Paperwhite was a law, not a leak. Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 is the European Union’s batteries law, and its Article 11, which applies from 18 February 2027, requires portable devices to let an ordinary owner remove and replace the battery with commercially available tools. Every Paperwhite up to the 2024 model has a glued-in cell, and Good e-Reader reported in July 2026 that Amazon’s refresh would move to back panels held by common screws.
Amazon’s announcement does not mention it either way. It talks about battery life, and about a recycled-cobalt battery in the base Kindle, but says nothing about whether you can open the new Paperwhite and swap the cell. So we are not going to tell you it has a replaceable battery, and we are not going to tell you it lacks one. If that is what you were waiting for, wait for the first teardowns after 28 October before you order.
Pre-order or not
Should you pre-order the new Paperwhite, or keep the one you have?
For a reader, the question is simpler than the launch makes it look. Thinner, a flush front and better contrast are real improvements, but none of them change what you do on a Paperwhite, which is read text at 300 PPI. If you own a 2021 or 2024 Paperwhite that still holds a charge, the new one is a nicer object, not a better book. If you are on an older Kindle, or you are buying your first, the 2026 model is the one to get (or the cheaper 6-inch Kindle), and pre-ordering costs you nothing but the wait until 28 October.
Check what your complaint really is before you spend $199.99. A battery that lasts a day or two is a worn cell, not an old design. Running out of room is a storage problem the 32 GB Signature Edition solves. Wanting color is a Colorsoft question. And Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days run on 6 and 7 October 2026, so if you were set on the 2024 Paperwhite at its old price, that is the week to look.
The Scribe fork
If you want to write on it, not just read
One reason people keep refreshing the Paperwhite listings is that they want it to do more than read, and the Paperwhite is not that device. It has no pen and no writing surface; that is deliberate, and it is what keeps it thin and light. If the thing pulling you toward a new Kindle is really the wish to annotate, plan or take notes, the model you want is the Kindle Scribe. The Paperwhite against the Scribe comparison settles it, and the next generation Kindle rundown covers the whole 2026 line, Scribe included.

A Scribe is only as useful as what is on its pages. A planner drawn for its 11-inch panel opens through Send to Kindle like any other PDF, and every tab and date links to its page, so you tap to the week instead of scrolling.

For where the rest of the line sits, the Kindle Scribe hub collects the model guides, the next Kindle release page tracks every 2026 launch date, and the wider e-reader field puts the Paperwhite next to what Kobo and the rest are doing this year.
