Most people asking about the next Kindle release are picturing a reader: a new Paperwhite, a smaller colour model, something to replace the one in their bag. That is not what Amazon shipped. The company spent its 2026 hardware attention on the writing side of the lineup and rebuilt the Kindle Scribe from the case in.

Amazon describes the new Scribe as 5.4mm thick and 400g, with an 11-inch glare-free display and page turns and pen strokes about 40% faster than before. It arrived in three versions rather than one, which is the genuinely new part: a Kindle Scribe with a front light from $499.99, a Kindle Scribe Colorsoft from $629.99, and a Kindle Scribe without a front light at $429.99.

That third model is the interesting one. Dropping the front light drops the price by $70 and, for people who only ever write at a desk in daylight, removes a layer they were paying for and not using. Here is the part the release-rumour articles tend to skip. Most people hunting for a next Kindle release mean a reading device, and on that side of the lineup nothing has changed since October 2024. The base Kindle, the Paperwhite, the Paperwhite Signature Edition and the Colorsoft are the same devices Amazon announced then, at the same list prices.

The colour Colorsoft belongs in the same row of that table, from the same October 2024 announcement, and Amazon widened the family after launch rather than replacing it: a 16 GB Colorsoft at $249.99 and a Colorsoft Kids at $269.99 now sit alongside the $279.99 Signature Edition. Widening a family is what a company does when it likes the hardware and wants more price points out of it. It is not the behaviour of a company about to retire the design. The open question

The Paperwhite question Amazon has not answered

Search volume for a 2026 Paperwhite is climbing hard, and for most readers it is the whole of what they mean by a next Kindle release. It deserves a straight answer rather than a hedge. Amazon has made no announcement about a new Kindle Paperwhite. Not a date, not a teaser, not a product page. Everything currently written about a 2026 Paperwhite, including the confident-sounding pieces, is inference from release cadence. The inference cuts both ways, which is worth knowing before you decide to wait. The eBook Reader argued in July 2026 that the current Paperwhite and Colorsoft are simply too recent to replace this year, and expected the lineup to hold as it is into 2027. Good e-Reader has reported the opposite: a refresh across the whole line, readers and Scribes together, landing late in 2026. Neither outlet is quoting Amazon, because Amazon has not said anything for them to quote.

So the useful move is not to pick an outlet to believe. It is to notice that one date in this story is not a guess at all.

The real deadline

One date makes a hardware refresh likely: 18 February 2027

Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 is the European Union’s batteries law. Article 11 covers the removability and replaceability of portable batteries, and it applies from 18 February 2027. In plain terms, a portable device sold in the EU from that date has to let an ordinary owner take the battery out using commercially available tools, without specialist tools, heat, or solvents. If fasteners are not reusable, the manufacturer has to supply them as spare parts.

Every Kindle currently on sale has a glued-in battery. That is a design decision the law is about to make unsellable in a large market, and it cannot be patched in software. Good e-Reader reported in July 2026 that Amazon is refreshing the line for exactly this reason, with back panels held by common screws rather than adhesive. Amazon has confirmed none of that, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What we can say is that the deadline is real, dated, and public, and it applies to every device in the table above.

The next milestone

The other date to watch is Amazon’s fall event, and it has none yet

Amazon runs a devices event most autumns, and as of 11 August 2026 it has not announced a date for this year’s. The 2025 edition ran on 30 September in New York, and that is where the entire current Scribe line was unveiled: three 11-inch models at 5.4 mm and 400 g, including the first Scribe with a color panel.

What that event should teach anyone waiting on a next Kindle release is the gap between the reveal and the box arriving. Those Scribes were announced at the end of September 2025 and shipped on 10 June 2026, roughly eight months later. So if a new reading Kindle turns up at a 2026 event, the honest purchase window is 2027, which lines up with the February 2027 deadline above rather than cutting across it.

The software side has already moved while the hardware waits. Every current Kindle, from the 2022 Scribe through the Colorsoft, now runs 5.19.6, and the last release with anything user-facing in it was 5.19.5 in June. What Amazon’s release pattern actually looks like

Amazon does not run an annual Kindle cycle the way phone makers run a September event. It moves in clusters: a big multi-device announcement, then eighteen months to two years of quiet, then another. Laid out on a line, the recent history and the one fixed date ahead look like this.

Read that pattern forward and the eighteen-month gap between clusters puts the next Kindle release for readers somewhere in the second half of 2026 or the first months of 2027, which is also where the battery deadline sits. That is not a leak and it is not a promise. It is two independent lines pointing at the same window.

Wait or buy

Should you wait for the next Kindle release or buy now?

Holding out for a next Kindle release has a cost that release-radar articles never price in: the months you spend not reading on the device you were going to enjoy. Against that, the upside of waiting here is a battery door and whatever else comes with it. For most people that trade is not close.

The exception is the writing side. If a Scribe is what you are after, the wait is already over, and buying the outgoing model now to save money is the weaker move given how much of the 2026 redesign is structural. Make the Kindle you already own feel new

Most of what people want from a next Kindle release turns out to be software, and a good deal of it has already arrived on the device in your hand. Amazon has rolled out a system-wide dark mode, Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive support, an AI notebook search that reads handwriting, note summaries and writing refinement on the Scribe, plus Story So Far and Ask This Book for readers who put a novel down for three weeks and lost the thread. None of that needed new hardware.
