Kindle Colorsoft 2026: price and release date

The Kindle Colorsoft 2026 is part of the redesigned Kindle lineup Amazon announced on 1 October 2026, alongside a new Paperwhite and a new 6-inch Kindle. The standard Colorsoft is $289.99 with 16 GB of storage in Graphite. The Colorsoft Signature Edition is $319.99 with 32 GB, an aluminum body, an auto-adjusting front light, double tap to turn pages and charging through pogo pins on a dock, in Graphite or Fig.

Amazon opened pre-orders region by region, and Good e-Reader reports that both versions ship on 28 October 2026. A Kids Colorsoft, with a kid-friendly cover and 12 months of Amazon Kids+, is on pre-order in the US, Canada, the UK, Germany and Japan.

The price story is simple. When Amazon widened the old Colorsoft family in 2025, the 16 GB model was $249.99 and the Signature Edition $279.99. Both new versions are $40 more. One trade worth noticing: the old Signature Edition listed wireless charging, and the new one charges through pogo pins on a dock, which is what makes Amazon’s new Page-Turn Cover and Charging Dock work.

What changed on the screen

The Colorsoft got the deepest rework in the October lineup. Amazon describes a completely redesigned display built with the same reverse printing it used across the family, so the screen sits flush with the front and the body color wraps onto it. Under that is a light guide with nitride LEDs to brighten color without washing out detail, micro-deflectors that cut stray light and even it out, an ultra-thin optical coating for clarity, and an oxide backplane with custom waveforms for faster page turns and higher contrast in both color and black and white.

What did not change is the resolution split that defines color E Ink. Good e-Reader lists 300 PPI for black-and-white content and 150 PPI for color, on a 7-inch screen. Text stays as sharp as a Paperwhite’s; color images are drawn at half that density, which reads as soft, printed-page color rather than a tablet’s.

Who it is for

Colorsoft or Paperwhite: who the color is worth $90 to

The 2026 Colorsoft costs $90 more than the 2026 Paperwhite, and for a novel reader that money buys almost nothing: the words on the page are the same 300 PPI black text. The color earns its price on the kinds of books where color is the content: comics and graphic novels, children’s picture books, cookbooks, travel guides, and a library of covers you can actually tell apart. Amazon pitches it at exactly that reader, and it is the honest split.

The Signature Edition is a separate decision. Its extra $30 buys 32 GB, aluminum, the auto-adjusting light and double tap, and it is the only Colorsoft that takes the $79.99 Page-Turn Cover and the $59.99 Charging Dock. If you read comics, 32 GB matters more than it does for novels, because illustrated books are much larger files.

The naming invites a mix-up. The Kindle Colorsoft is a 7-inch reader with no pen. The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft is Amazon’s 11-inch color writing tablet, redesigned earlier in 2026 and untouched by the October launch.
