The lineup

Every Kindle you can buy in October 2026, with its price

Amazon redesigned the whole reading line on 1 October 2026: a flush-front screen on every model, colour that wraps from front to back, and a price rise of $40 to $50 across the board. The 6-inch Kindle went on sale that day. The Paperwhite and the Colorsoft are on pre-order and, per Good e-Reader, reach buyers on 28 October. The writing line, the Scribe, was redesigned earlier and was left alone in October, so the best Kindle 2026 chart below is the first one in two years where every row is a current product.

So the short answer to “how much is a Kindle” is $149.99 for the smallest one, $199.99 for the one most people should buy, and $429.99 and up if you want to write on it. The reading prices come from Amazon’s launch announcement, the Scribe prices from Amazon’s own US listings, all read on 9 October 2026. Signature Editions add an aluminum back, 32 GB, an auto-adjusting front light, pogo-pin dock charging and double-tap page turns; on the 6-inch Kindle the aluminum version adds only the metal back and the storage.

Our pick

Best Kindle 2026 for most readers: the $199.99 Paperwhite

If you read novels and non-fiction and want one device that does it well for years, buy the Paperwhite. It is the middle of the range for a reason: it carries everything that matters for reading and nothing you will pay for and not use. Amazon’s announcement lists a thinner, lighter body than the 2024 model, waterproofing, an adjustable warm light, up to 12 weeks of battery on a charge, and what it calls the largest Kindle Paperwhite display with the highest contrast ratio. Good e-Reader puts the screen at 7 inches and 300 pixels per inch, the same text sharpness as the Colorsoft and the Scribe.

The $50 step up to the Signature Edition buys an aluminum back, 32 GB instead of 16, an auto-adjusting front light, double-tap page turns and the pogo-pin contacts that the new Charging Dock and Page-Turn Cover need. Storage is the weakest reason: 16 GB holds thousands of books. The auto light is the strongest, if you read in changing light and hate reaching for the slider. The accessories only work with the Signature models, so if the dock or the button cover appeals, the Signature Edition is the only way in.

Two things the Paperwhite is not. It is not on sale yet: Amazon has it on rolling pre-order and Good e-Reader’s launch coverage gives 28 October 2026 as the date it reaches buyers. And it is not a writing device. If the reason you want a Kindle is to mark up PDFs or keep a planner, skip ahead to the Scribe, because no amount of waiting makes a Paperwhite take a pen. Our Paperwhite launch page has the full spec list and what changed from 2024.

The small one

The $149.99 Kindle: when the smallest Kindle is the right one

The 6-inch Kindle is the one Amazon calls the most pocket-sized Kindle it has made, and that is the whole case for it. It has 16 GB, up to six weeks of battery, books that open 30% faster than on the 2024 model, the same flush-front screen as its bigger siblings, and it comes in Ube (a deep purple) or Graphite. For the first time there is an aluminum-backed version with 32 GB at $189.99, in Alpine Sky or Seaglass Green. It went on sale on 1 October in nineteen countries, so unlike the Paperwhite you can have one this week.

What you give up against the Paperwhite is written into Amazon’s own announcement by omission: the Paperwhite’s entry lists waterproofing and an adjustable warm light, the Kindle’s does not mention either, and the Kindle’s six weeks of battery is half the Paperwhite’s twelve. The screen is an inch smaller. If the Kindle will live in a coat pocket, ride the subway and get read in short bursts, none of that matters and the $50 saving is real. If it will live on a nightstand, the Paperwhite is the better $50.

One early-batch caveat. On 8 October Good e-Reader reported that some units of the new 6-inch Kindle, in both plastic and aluminum, show a visible glow along the screen edge in dark mode. Amazon’s statement to Good e-Reader calls the glow an expected side effect of the colour bezel that appears in dark mode at high brightness, and recommends a lower brightness setting. Check yours under dark mode with the front light up in the first week; if the glow bothers you at the brightness you actually read at, return it inside the return window rather than living with it. The Kindle 12th generation page covers the base model in detail, including why people call it that when Amazon’s own listing names it only “Kindle (newest model)”.

Colour

Kindle Colorsoft: colour for covers, comics and highlights

The 2026 Colorsoft is the second generation of Amazon’s colour reader. The first launched as a Signature Edition only in 2024 and gained a plain 16 GB model at $249.99 in July 2025, per VICE; the 2026 line keeps both: $289.99 with 16 GB in Graphite, or $319.99 for the Signature Edition with 32 GB in Graphite or Fig. Amazon describes a redesigned display stack with a nitride-LED light guide, micro-deflectors to spread the light evenly and an oxide backplane with custom waveforms for faster, higher-contrast page turns in both colour and black and white. Good e-Reader lists the screen at 300 pixels per inch for text and 150 for colour, with the two models weighing 204 and 229 grams.

Be honest with yourself about what colour is for. Colour e-ink is softer and dimmer than a phone screen, and its colour resolution is half its text resolution; that is physics, not a flaw in this model. It earns its $90 over the Paperwhite if you read comics, manga, cookbooks, children’s picture books or travel guides, if you highlight in several colours and want to see them, or if you simply want your library’s covers to look like covers. If you read novels, it is $90 for a prettier home screen. The Colorsoft 2026 page goes through the display changes and the pre-order terms; it ships the same day as the Paperwhite, 28 October.

Writing

Kindle Scribe: the one for notes, PDFs and planners

The Scribe is a different purchase. It is an 11-inch e-ink tablet with a pen in the box, and Amazon’s own line is that the screen “mirrors the proportions of a sheet of paper”. The current generation is 5.4 mm thick, 400 grams and, in Amazon’s words, 40% faster for writing and page turns (Amazon does not say against which model), and the pen attaches magnetically and never needs charging. Three models are on sale now: a 16 GB version without a front light at $429.99, the front-lit 32 GB at $499.99 and 64 GB at $549.99, and the Scribe Colorsoft at $629.99 for 32 GB or $679.99 for 64 GB, which writes in ten pen colours and five highlighter colours. Those prices are from Amazon’s US listings, re-read on 16 October 2026, and all were in stock.

Which Scribe? The no-front-light model saves $70 and is a fine desk device, but a reading Kindle without a light is a daytime-only Kindle, so most people should pay for the 32 GB with the light. The 64 GB is for people loading hundreds of PDFs. Amazon also still sells the previous 10.2-inch Scribe, 16 GB with a front light, at $399.99: the cheapest way onto a Scribe if the bigger, faster screen does not matter to you. The Colorsoft Scribe is for anyone who marks up in colour or wants a planner that is not grey; our Scribe Colorsoft review covers what the colour panel costs you in contrast. The Scribe review and the pricing page go deeper on each model.

The Complete System $99 · five dated books drawn for the Scribe’s 3:4 page, so a planner, a budget and a habit grid live on the device you already read on.

The reason a planner person buys a Scribe and not a Paperwhite is that a Scribe takes a PDF and lets you write on it, and a PDF planner with linked tabs turns the tablet into a dated year that you can flip through with the pen. The catch worth knowing before you buy is that the Scribe only treats PDFs sent through Amazon’s own Send to Kindle route as writable; a file copied over USB opens but will not take ink. Our Send to Kindle guide walks through it, and the Kindle planner page shows what a dated planner looks like on the 11-inch page.

By reader

Which Kindle should you buy? Match the model to how you read

The lineup is cleaner than it has been in years, so the best Kindle 2026 for you mostly comes down to where and what you read. Run down the list and stop at the first line that sounds like you.

  • You read in bed and in the bath. Paperwhite, $199.99. Waterproofing and the warm light are the two features the base Kindle does not list, and bed and bath are exactly where they pay off.
  • You read on a commute and want it in a pocket. Kindle, $149.99. The 6-inch body is the point; the aluminum $189.99 version is the same device with a nicer back and double the storage.
  • You read comics, manga, cookbooks or picture books. Colorsoft, $289.99. Colour is the only reason to pay this much for a 7-inch reader, and for these books it is a good reason.
  • You highlight and take notes while you read. Colorsoft if the notes stay in the margins and you want the highlights in colour; Scribe if you want to write on the page itself.
  • You annotate PDFs, study, or keep a planner. Scribe, $499.99 for the front-lit 32 GB. Nothing else in the range takes a pen.
  • You are buying for a child. The Kids editions start at $179.99 and bundle a cover and a year of Kids+. The 6-inch Kids Kindle is on sale now and the Kids Colorsoft is on pre-order in the US, Canada, UK, Germany and Japan; Amazon’s announcement gives no date for the Kids Paperwhite.
  • You are buying a gift and have no idea. Paperwhite. It is the one nobody returns.

Readers buy the Paperwhite. Pocket readers buy the Kindle. Comic readers buy the Colorsoft. Writers buy the Scribe.

Two cases where a Kindle is the wrong answer. If you want a tablet that runs Android apps or reads library books from several stores, a Kindle is the most locked-down reader on the market, and our best e-readers of 2026 page compares it against Kobo, Boox and the rest. And if the writing side matters more than the reading side, a Scribe is one of several 10-to-13-inch e-ink tablets; the best e-ink tablet guide puts it beside the reMarkable, Supernote and Boox options by the job you want done.

Timing

Ship dates, pre-orders and the new accessories

Three of the four reading-line prices in the table are pre-orders as this is written. Amazon’s announcement puts the 6-inch Kindle on sale from 1 October in the US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Poland, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Australia, with the Paperwhite and Colorsoft opening for pre-order “on a rolling basis” in the same countries. Good e-Reader’s launch coverage gives 28 October 2026 for the Paperwhite and the same date for the Colorsoft. The three Scribes ship now. Our release-date tracker is updated as those dates move.

The accessories are new this year and worth a line each. The Kindle Click ($34.99) is a Bluetooth page-turn remote that works with every new Kindle and any model from 2024 on; demand outran supply, and Good e-Reader reports that day-one orders ship on 11 November with many pushed to March 2027, so order it with the Kindle rather than after. The Page-Turn Cover ($79.99) puts physical buttons on a magnetic cover and the Charging Dock ($59.99) stands the reader up and charges it, and both work only with the Paperwhite Signature and Colorsoft Signature, which is the quiet argument for the Signature Editions. Plain covers start at $39.99, colour-matched to the device. The Kindle Click page has the pairing details and which older Kindles qualify.

Old versus new

What the 2024 Kindles cost, and when a discount beats the new one

Every reading model got more expensive. Amazon’s October 2024 announcement priced the Kindle at $109.99, the Paperwhite at $159.99, the Paperwhite Signature Edition at $199.99 and the Colorsoft Signature Edition at $279.99. Against the 2026 list that is $40 more for the Kindle and the Paperwhite, $50 more for the Paperwhite Signature and $40 more for the Colorsoft Signature, and the plain 16 GB Colorsoft, added in July 2025 at $249.99, is $40 more at $289.99. The Scribe prices did not move in October because the Scribe was not part of the launch.

That gap is why a discounted 2024 model is worth a look before you settle on the best Kindle 2026 list price. What you give up is what the redesign added: the flush-front glass, the slimmer body, the higher-contrast Paperwhite panel and the new colours. What you keep is 300 pixels per inch, the same Kindle store and, on the 2024 Paperwhite, the same waterproofing and warm light. One caution: on 9 October Amazon’s own US listings showed the 2024 Paperwhite at $199.99 and the 2024 Colorsoft at $289.99, the new list prices, so the discount has to come from a sale or another seller, not from the model year. Our rule: if a 2024 Paperwhite is $50 or more under the new $199.99, it is the better buy for a plain reader; closer than that, buy the 2026 model and have the newer screen for the next five years. Whichever year you land on, the comparison with the other brands is on the Kindle versus Kobo page, and the whole 2026 lineup, Scribe included, is laid out model by model there.

FAQ

Common questions, answered briefly

How much is a Kindle in 2026?
From $149.99 for the 6-inch Kindle to $679.99 for the 64 GB Kindle Scribe Colorsoft. The Paperwhite is $199.99, the Colorsoft $289.99, and the Signature Editions $189.99, $249.99 and $319.99. Amazon’s US prices, read 16 October 2026.
Which Kindle is the best one to buy in 2026?
The $199.99 Kindle Paperwhite for most readers: waterproof, warm light, up to 12 weeks of battery and the largest, highest-contrast Paperwhite screen Amazon has made. It reaches buyers on 28 October 2026.
Is the Kindle Scribe worth it over a Paperwhite?
Only if you will write on it. The Scribe is an 11-inch tablet with a pen, from $429.99, and it exists for notes, PDF markup and planners. For reading alone the Paperwhite does the same job at $199.99 in a body that fits a coat pocket.
Are the new Kindles waterproof?
Amazon’s US listings call the 2026 Paperwhite and Colorsoft waterproof; neither the listing nor the announcement claims it for the 6-inch Kindle. Treat the base Kindle as the one to keep out of the bath.
Do the 2026 Kindles have a replaceable battery?
Amazon has not said. The launch announcement talks about battery life and recycled cobalt and nothing else, so the answer waits on teardowns after the Paperwhite and Colorsoft ship on 28 October.
