The lineup

Every new Kindle in 2026, in one table

For most of 2026 the honest answer to “what is the next generation Kindle” was “a Scribe, and wait for the rest”. That changed on 1 October, when Amazon announced a completely redesigned Kindle lineup: a new base Kindle, a new Paperwhite and a new Colorsoft, each with a Signature or aluminum step-up, plus Kids versions and a set of page-turn accessories. Together with the Scribe models that shipped earlier in the year, this is the whole 2026 Kindle shelf.

The 28 October ship date for the Paperwhite and Colorsoft comes from Good e-Reader’s launch report; Amazon itself says pre-orders open on a rolling basis by region. Kids versions of the Kindle, Paperwhite and Colorsoft start at $179.99 with 12 months of Amazon Kids+ included.

What changed

The reading Kindles: what the October redesign changed

The shared change is the screen’s construction. Amazon calls it a reverse stack display, a first for e-readers, and it lets the screen sit flush with the front of every model instead of under a raised border. The body color now wraps from the back onto the front, in new shades: Ube, a deep purple, plus Alpine Sky, Seaglass Green, Graphite and Fig.

The 6-inch Kindle is the most pocket-sized one Amazon has made, with 16 GB, up to six weeks of battery and book opening that Amazon rates 30% faster than the model before it. For the first time it also comes with an aluminum back and 32 GB, at $189.99. Good e-Reader lists the standard model at 140 g and the aluminum one at 162 g.

The Paperwhite is thinner and lighter, keeps waterproofing and the adjustable warm light, and runs up to 12 weeks on a charge; its oxide backplane is where Amazon’s contrast claim comes from. We go through it in full, including whether to upgrade, on our Kindle Paperwhite 13th generation page. The Colorsoft got the deepest rework: a redesigned display with a nitride LED light guide, and, per Good e-Reader, 300 PPI for black and white and 150 PPI for color.

The accessories are new too. Kindle Click ($34.99) is a Bluetooth page-turn remote for any Kindle from 2024 or later. The Page-Turn Cover ($79.99) and Charging Dock ($59.99) connect through pogo pins and work only with the Paperwhite and Colorsoft Signature Editions, which is the clearest reason to pay for a Signature model.

For most of 2026 the honest answer was a Scribe, and wait for the rest. On 1 October the rest arrived. The October 2026 launch

The writing line

The Scribe redesign came first

The October launch did not touch the Scribe, because the Scribe had already had its year. Amazon rebuilt it from the ground up: a thinner 5.4 mm body at 400 g, page turns and writing that Amazon rates about 40 percent faster, and AI-powered notebook search that treats your handwriting as something you can look through, not just static ink.

The headline was color. The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft is the first Scribe you can write on in real color, and the deep-red Fig edition landed on 28 January 2026. Amazon also shipped a Scribe with no front light on 10 June, the cheapest way onto the new platform: the full 11-inch, 300 PPI writing surface without reading in the dark. Prices on that model were reported inconsistently at launch, so the tier-by-tier math lives in our Kindle Scribe 2026 lineup guide, and the color decision in Kindle Scribe vs Colorsoft.

Digital Wellness Planner $29 · what color is for on a Scribe Colorsoft: a daily check-in page where a few muted marker colors separate mood, energy and intention, while the printed form stays black and white.

What a Scribe is for shows up on the page, not the spec sheet. A planner drawn to its 11-inch panel opens through Send to Kindle like any other PDF, with every tab and date linked so you tap to the week instead of scrolling.

The Planner for Kindle Scribe $49 · the week spread on the 11-inch Scribe panel: days down the left with room to write, a this-week list and a notes column, every tab linked so you tap straight to the day.

The open question

Replaceable batteries: the part Amazon did not mention

Before the launch, the strongest reason to expect a full redesign was a law. Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 requires portable-device batteries to be removable and replaceable by the owner, and its Article 11 applies from 18 February 2027. In July 2026 Good e-Reader reported that Amazon would refresh the whole line with back panels held by common screws so the cell could be swapped.

The redesign arrived, but Amazon’s announcement says nothing about the battery beyond its life on a charge and, for the base Kindle, that it uses 100% recycled cobalt. So the question is still open. A glued battery has always been the hidden expiry date on an e-reader, and a Kindle you can open with a screwdriver could outlast two or three cells. If that matters to you, wait for the first teardowns after the late-October ship dates before you order.

The Complete System $99 · a system that outlives the hardware: the habit book, eight habits with current and best streaks and the 7, 30, 66 and 100 day milestones, which opens the same way on every Scribe generation.

Software

What is reaching Kindles through software in 2026

Not every upgrade needs new hardware, and a few of the year’s most useful changes arrived as updates to devices people already own. A full dark mode rolled out in early 2026, inverting text and background across notebooks, documents, PDFs, and the home and library screens. The new home screen, Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive connections and some of the newer AI features also carried back to the earlier Scribe models.

On the reading side, the AI features worth knowing are Story So Far, which catches you up on a book without spoilers, and Ask this Book, which answers a question from highlighted text. Amazon also opened up file portability: since 20 January 2026 you can download EPUB and PDF copies of your DRM-free books from Manage Your Content and Devices.

Buy or wait

Should you buy a new Kindle now?

If you read on a Kindle from 2021 or later that still holds a charge, the October models are nicer objects rather than better books: the same 300 PPI text, a flush front and better contrast, for $40 more than the last generation. If you are on something older or buying your first, the 2026 models are the ones to get, and the 6-inch Kindle is on sale now. If you want to write, the Scribe line is current and nothing is replacing it this year. Our best Kindle 2026 guide sorts the shelf by how you read, and the next Kindle release page tracks every date.

FAQ

Common questions, answered briefly

What is the next generation Kindle in 2026?
The redesigned lineup Amazon announced on 1 October 2026: a 6-inch Kindle from $149.99, a Paperwhite from $199.99 and a Colorsoft from $289.99, all with a flush-front screen, plus Signature and aluminum versions. The Scribe writing line was redesigned earlier in 2026.
When do the new Kindles come out?
The 6-inch Kindle and its aluminum version went on sale on 1 October 2026. The Paperwhite and Colorsoft are on pre-order, and Good e-Reader reports they ship on 28 October 2026.
Will there be a new Kindle in 2027?
Amazon has announced nothing for 2027. With the reading line and the Scribe line both redesigned in 2026, a 2027 refresh would be unusually fast; the one date to watch is the EU battery rule that applies from 18 February 2027.
Do the new Kindles have a replaceable battery?
Amazon’s announcement does not say. EU rules require user-replaceable batteries in portable devices from 18 February 2027, and earlier reporting expected screw-held back panels, but none of that is confirmed, so wait for teardowns if it matters to you.
Did the Kindle Scribe get a new model in October 2026?
No. The October launch covered the Kindle, Paperwhite and Colorsoft. The Scribe was redesigned earlier in 2026, with the first color Scribe and a lower-cost model without a front light.

Which one are you getting, if any? Tell us in the comments, especially if you are holding out for a battery you can swap, and we will fold what you report into this page once the teardowns land.
