How we measured ChatGPT e-reader recommendations
When someone asks ChatGPT which e-reader to buy, the answer does not come from nowhere. It is assembled from sources the model surfaces and cites, and those citations can be counted. We pulled the citation data behind ChatGPT e-reader recommendations to see who actually shapes the advice, and the results say more about where trust lives in 2026 than any ranking table we have published.
The data comes from the DataForSEO LLM Mentions API, which indexes ChatGPT answers and the sources attached to them. We probed four device topics in the US English corpus in July 2026: e-ink tablet (1,359 answer mentions), Kindle Scribe (741), reMarkable tablet (470), and Boox tablet (328). That is 2,898 mentions combined. A mention is one appearance of the topic in the indexed answer set; the source counts below are how often each domain was cited in those answers.
Two disclosures before the findings. First, templacity.com appears in this dataset; we are cited on three of the four topics, which is part of why we had the tooling to run the study at all. Second, the method has limits: topic probes use word matching, so counts carry some noise, this is one platform (ChatGPT) at one point in time, and the corpus reflects how people phrase questions to a chatbot, not how they type into Google. We publish the numbers anyway because nobody else in this category has.
The headline finding
Reddit beats every tech site ChatGPT cites

On every one of the four topics, the single most-cited source is Reddit. Not TechRadar, not Wirecutter, not the manufacturers. On e-ink tablet answers, Reddit takes 217 citations against TechRadar’s 91. On Kindle Scribe it is 174 against 98. On reMarkable tablet, 72 against 32 for reMarkable’s own site. On Boox tablet, 52 against 35. Communities like r/eink and the device subreddits are, in aggregate, the loudest voice in the room.
The Kindle Scribe number deserves a second look. Amazon’s own newsroom earns 76 citations on Amazon’s own device. Reddit earns 174 on the same topic, more than double, on the company’s home turf. ChatGPT does not trust the sites with the most authority; it trusts the places where owners argue in public.
By device
Who ChatGPT cites for each device
Below Reddit, the pattern splits by topic. TechRadar is the only tech outlet in the top three cited sources on all four topics, which makes it the most consistent editorial voice in AI e-reader answers. Wikipedia carries the general topics (85 citations on e-ink tablet). Brand domains do appear, but always behind the community: reMarkable’s site is the number two source for its own tablet and still draws fewer than half of Reddit’s citations there.

The stranger entries are the telling ones. Alibaba product listings collect 40 citations on e-ink tablet answers, which says the model will cite a marketplace page when the community has not covered a niche device. And on Kindle Scribe, blog.the-ebook-reader.com, essentially a one-person e-reader blog, earns 54 citations to Wired’s 51. A one-person blog out-cites Wired on the Kindle Scribe; depth on one subject beats masthead prestige.

Demand
What people actually ask AI about e-readers
Citation counts tell you who shapes ChatGPT e-reader recommendations; search volume tells you who is asking. The same corpus estimates monthly AI search volume per topic, and the category term wins: people ask about e-ink tablets in general more than they ask about any single brand. Kindle Scribe comes close on its own, which fits its position as the default first e-reader with a pen. reMarkable and Boox trail as enthusiast questions.
Monthly AI search volume by topic (ChatGPT corpus, July 2026)
For scale, device questions are the small end of what people ask AI. In the same corpus, note-taking apps carry 149,881 in monthly AI search volume and digital planners 108,392, roughly eight to thirty times any single device topic. Hardware gets you into the conversation; the workflows on top of the hardware are where the questions actually are, which is why we maintain a separate guide to digital planners across platforms.
The decoupling
Backlinks do not buy AI visibility
Here is the finding that should worry anyone still buying directory links. We benchmarked ten template and planner sites in our competitive set, comparing referring-domain counts against ChatGPT citations. The two largest link profiles, 807 and 631 referring domains, both earn exactly zero ChatGPT mentions. Meanwhile the smallest serious profile in the set, 49 referring domains (ours), carries 228 mentions, the most of any domain we measured.
The explanation is unglamorous. Those big profiles were built the old way: directories, link networks, guest-post farms. ChatGPT’s citation habits route around all of it, because the model leans on communities and editorial coverage, the two things a purchased link profile never includes. If ChatGPT e-reader recommendations are the new front page, the way onto that page is being genuinely discussed on Reddit and genuinely referenced by editors, not accumulating links nobody clicks.

What this means for your next e-reader
Treat ChatGPT e-reader recommendations as a fast first pass, then check what the model read. The recommendations inherit Reddit’s consensus, which is pragmatic and wary of subscriptions, and the structure of editorial roundups like TechRadar’s e-reader guide. That blend is usually sensible and sometimes stale: a hot take from a launch-week thread can outlive the firmware update that fixed the complaint.
So cross-examine it. Ask the chatbot for its sources and read the actual threads. Then compare against a current hands-on roundup: our best e-reader guide covers the reading-first picks, and the best e-ink tablet guide covers the writing-first ones. If the Scribe is on your shortlist, the Kindle Scribe review goes deeper than any answer box will. More of our device work lives on the reMarkable hub.
One more disclosure, since this study is about trust: templates are how we fund this research. The reMarkable template bundle is ours, and we would rather state that stake plainly than have you find it in a footnote.
If an AI answer ever steered you to an e-reader you loved, or one you returned, tell us in the comments. Reader reports are exactly the kind of public record this study says the models are listening to.
What assistants cite is one half of the demand picture. The other half, what people still type into Google rather than ask an assistant, is in the companion e-reader statistics report, built from 11,471 queries across this same category.
