Kindle 12th generation: price and release date

The new base Kindle is already out. Amazon announced it on 1 October 2026 and put it on sale the same day in nineteen countries, including the US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, the UK, most of the EU’s big markets, Japan and Australia. The standard model is $149.99 with 16 GB in Ube, a deep purple, or Graphite. The new aluminum-back version is $189.99 with 32 GB, in Alpine Sky Aluminum or Seaglass Green Aluminum. A Kids version with a kid-friendly cover and 12 months of Amazon Kids+ starts at $179.99.

The 300 PPI figure, the weights and the 108.0 x 152.8 x 6.85 mm size come from Good e-Reader’s launch report; the rest is Amazon’s own announcement. When we checked Amazon’s 2024 launch page in July 2026, that Kindle listed at $109.99, so the new one is $40 more.

The naming

Is it really the 12th generation?

Amazon does not number its Kindles, and its announcement calls this simply the all-new Kindle. The “12th generation” name came from the leak: Good e-Reader’s 29 September report on leaked images called it a 12th-generation Kindle, and that is the label people have searched for since. Enthusiast counts of Kindle generations do not always agree, and some coverage now calls the whole October lineup the 13th generation, so treat the number as a nickname. The useful identifier is the year: the 2026 Kindle is the one with the flush front and the color options.

What changed

What actually changed

The redesign is mostly about how the device is built. Amazon rethought how the display, front light and touch layers are assembled and bonded so the screen could sit flush with the front, which also made the Kindle smaller and lighter. The body color now wraps from the back onto the front. Book opening is 30% faster than the previous release, the housing uses recycled materials, and the battery uses 100% recycled cobalt.

The aluminum version is the genuinely new idea. It keeps the same size and screen, adds a matte back made from 80% recycled aluminum and doubles the storage to 32 GB. Amazon frames it as the feel younger readers expect from their other devices. At 162 g it is 22 g heavier than the plastic model, which you will notice more than the extra storage if you read one-handed.

Two things Amazon’s announcement does not say about the base Kindle: whether it is waterproof, and whether it has a warm light. It does say both for the Paperwhite. If either matters to you, that silence is a reason to look at the Paperwhite rather than assume.

Which to buy

Kindle, aluminum Kindle or Paperwhite?

Three readers sit within $50 of each other now: the Kindle at $149.99, the aluminum Kindle at $189.99 and the Paperwhite at $199.99. The 6-inch Kindle is the one that fits a jacket pocket and costs least. The Paperwhite costs $10 more than the aluminum Kindle and buys a bigger 7-inch screen, stated waterproofing, an adjustable warm light and up to 12 weeks of battery. Unless the aluminum back is the point for you, that is the better way to spend the extra money.

Reading or writing

If you also want to write

No reading Kindle takes a pen. If you want to take notes, annotate or plan on the device, that is the 11-inch Kindle Scribe, redesigned earlier in 2026. A Scribe is only as useful as what is on its pages, which is why we draw planners for it.

The Planner for Kindle Scribe $49 · what the pen is for on the 11-inch Scribe: a day page with an hourly schedule on the left and a top three and notes pane you write into, every tab linked.
