The next Kindle release: 1 October 2026, and the dates that follow
Most people asking about the next Kindle release are picturing a reader, and on 1 October 2026 Amazon delivered one: a completely redesigned Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft, each with a flush-front screen and a step-up version with an aluminum back. Here is when each one actually reaches you.
| Model | Price | Release |
|---|---|---|
| Kindle, 6-inch, 16 GB | $149.99 | On sale 1 Oct 2026 |
| Kindle, aluminum, 32 GB | $189.99 | On sale 1 Oct 2026 |
| Kindle Paperwhite, 16 GB | $199.99 | Pre-order, ships 28 Oct 2026 |
| Paperwhite Signature Edition, 32 GB | $249.99 | Pre-order, ships 28 Oct 2026 |
| Kindle Colorsoft, 16 GB | $289.99 | Pre-order, ships 28 Oct 2026 |
| Colorsoft Signature Edition, 32 GB | $319.99 | Pre-order, ships 28 Oct 2026 |
| Kindle Click page-turn remote | $34.99 | Day-one orders 11 Nov 2026, later ones March 2027 |
Amazon says the 6-inch Kindle and its aluminum version are available from launch day in nineteen countries, including the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, France, Japan and Australia, while the Paperwhite and Colorsoft open for pre-order on a rolling basis in the same regions. The 28 October ship date comes from Good e-Reader’s launch coverage, and so does the Kindle Click delay: demand outran stock, so day-one orders ship on 11 November and many later orders slipped to March 2027.
What changed on each model, and how the prices moved against the 2024 line, is covered model by model in our next generation Kindle rundown, with dedicated pages for the 6-inch Kindle, the Kindle Colorsoft 2026 and Kindle Click; the Paperwhite gets its own page as the Kindle Paperwhite 13th generation. This page sticks to the question of when.
For a year the honest answer was a Scribe, and wait for the rest. On 1 October the rest arrived. The October 2026 launch
Earlier in 2026
The Scribe release came first
Before the reading line moved, Amazon spent the first half of 2026 on the writing side and rebuilt the Kindle Scribe from the case in. Amazon describes the new Scribe as 5.4mm thick and 400g, with an 11-inch glare-free display and page turns and pen strokes about 40% faster than before. It arrived in three versions rather than one: a Kindle Scribe with a front light from $499.99, a Kindle Scribe Colorsoft from $629.99, and a Kindle Scribe without a front light at $429.99.
That third model dropped the price by $70 by dropping a layer that desk-bound, daylight writers were paying for and not using. Good e-Reader reported it reaching United States buyers on 10 June 2026, with shipping from the 11th. The October launch did not add a new Scribe, so if you are weighing the three, our which Kindle Scribe to buy in 2026 guide is still the current answer, and the older-versus-newer question sits in the new Scribe versus the old one.
Cadence
What Amazon’s release pattern looks like now
Amazon does not run an annual Kindle cycle the way phone makers run a September event. It moves in clusters: a big multi-device announcement, then eighteen months to two years of quiet, then another. The October 2026 launch landed almost exactly two years after the October 2024 one, which is the pattern holding, not breaking.
The previous reading line
Amazon announced the base Kindle at $109.99, the Paperwhite at $159.99, the Paperwhite Signature Edition at $199.99, and its first colour Kindle.
The previous Kindle Scribe ships
From $399.99, with the pen included. This is the device the 2026 Scribes replaced.
The Scribe family is rebuilt
Three models instead of one, a 5.4mm body, and the AI notebook tools.
The front-light-free Scribe reaches buyers
Reported by Good e-Reader as the United States availability date, with shipping from the 11th.
The reading line is redesigned
New Kindle, Paperwhite and Colorsoft announced with flush-front screens; the Kindle goes on sale the same day.
Paperwhite and Colorsoft ship
The date Good e-Reader reports for both, Signature Editions included.
EU battery rule applies
Not an Amazon date. Portable devices sold in the EU need user-replaceable batteries from this day.
Read that pattern forward and the next cluster of new reading Kindles would land around late 2028. That is not a leak and not a promise, and a battery-driven revision could cut across it, which is the open question below.
The open question
The date Amazon did not address: 18 February 2027
Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 is the European Union’s batteries law. Article 11 covers the removability and replaceability of portable batteries, and it applies from 18 February 2027. In plain terms, a portable device sold in the EU from that date has to let an ordinary owner take the battery out using commercially available tools, without specialist tools, heat, or solvents.
Every Kindle up to the 2024 line has a glued-in battery, and Good e-Reader reported in July 2026 that the refresh would move to back panels held by common screws. The refresh arrived; the confirmation did not. Amazon’s announcement talks about battery life, and a 100% recycled cobalt battery in the base Kindle, but says nothing about whether you can open any of the new models and swap the cell. If a replaceable battery is the reason you were waiting, wait for the first teardowns after the late-October ship dates.
Buy or wait
Should you buy now, or wait for the next one?
The waiting is mostly over. If you were holding out for a new reading Kindle, it is here, and the remaining wait is a few weeks for the Paperwhite and Colorsoft to ship. Waiting past that for a 2027 model means waiting for something Amazon has not announced, on a pattern that points two years out.
The exception is the writing side. If a Scribe is what you are after, nothing in October replaced it, so the current lineup is the one to buy. The Scribe against the colour Scribe comparison is the one that actually decides it.
Meanwhile
Make the Kindle you already own feel new
Most of what people want from a next Kindle release turns out to be software, and a good deal of it has already arrived on the device in your hand. Amazon has rolled out a system-wide dark mode, Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive support, an AI notebook search that reads handwriting, note summaries and writing refinement on the Scribe, plus Story So Far and Ask This Book for readers who put a novel down for three weeks and lost the thread. None of that needed new hardware.
The other half is structure. A Scribe with nothing loaded onto it is a very expensive blank page, and that is usually what people are reacting to when they start browsing for a newer model six months in.
If you want the whole picture on where the line sits right now rather than where it is going, the Kindle Scribe hub collects the model guides, the pricing breakdowns and the template work in one place.
