The grid

What a habit tracker printable is, and why paper works for it

A habit tracker printable is a single page with a grid on it. The habits you want to keep run down the left side, the days of the month run across the top, and each day you do the thing, you fill its box. By the end of the month the page is a picture of what you actually did, not what you meant to do.

You can see the standard shape in one of the pages ranking for this search, a habit tracker PDF handed out by the counseling center at Ball State University. It is one landscape US Letter page with rows for habits, columns numbered 1 to 31, and a row of months to circle, so the same sheet works for any month of the year. That is the whole format, and it has barely changed because it does not need to.

Paper suits habit tracking better than most planning jobs. An app asks you to open it; a printed page on the fridge or inside your planner is simply there, and the row of filled boxes is visible every time you walk past. Filling a box by hand is also a small, deliberate act, which is most of what a tracker is for.

Layouts

Four habit tracker layouts, and who each one suits

Every free habit tracker you will find is a variation on four layouts. They differ in how many habits they hold and how far ahead they look.

The monthly grid is the default for a reason. Ten habit rows fit comfortably on a landscape page, twenty if the rows are tight, and a whole month reads at a glance. The weekly strip is seven boxes a habit, small enough to sit at the bottom of a weekly planner page, which makes it the right choice if you already plan week by week and do not want another sheet to keep track of.

The 30-day single habit page gives one habit the whole sheet, with room beside the boxes for why you started, what you will do when you slip, and what you get at the end. The clementinecreative tracker on page one of this search takes the middle road: one Letter page with space for eight habits over 30 days. The year in pixels is 365 small squares, one per day, usually coloured by a key. It is less a checklist than a record, and it suits mood or a single yearly goal better than a list of chores.

How many

How many habits to put on a habit tracker printable

Fewer than the grid has room for. A page with twenty rows invites twenty habits, and a tracker with twenty habits becomes a daily report card you stop filling in by the second week. Start with three to five, the ones that matter this month, and leave the other rows empty. An empty row costs nothing; a row you fail every day teaches you to ignore the page.

Write each habit so a box can be filled without a judgement call. “Exercise more” cannot be ticked; “walk 20 minutes” can. “Read” is vague; “read 10 pages” is a box. If a habit only happens on some days, such as the gym on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, shade the days it is not due before the month starts, so an empty box always means a miss and never a rest day.

One-off tasks do not belong on a habit grid, where they sit as a single tick in a row of empty boxes. Put them on a printable to-do checklist instead and keep the tracker for what repeats.

An empty row costs nothing; a row you fail every day teaches you to ignore the page.

Using it

How to use a habit tracker so it lasts past week two

Most printed trackers are abandoned for the same reasons: they live somewhere you do not look, they get filled from memory days later, and one bad day turns into a blank week. Four habits of use fix most of that.

  1. 1

Put the page where the day ends

On the fridge, beside the bed, or as the first page of your planner. The tracker has to be in the path of a routine you already have.

  2. 2

Fill it the same time every day

Tie it to something fixed, such as brushing your teeth at night. Filling a week of boxes from memory on Sunday is guessing.

  3. 3

    Never miss twice

One empty box is a day. Two in a row is the start of a new pattern. Make the day after a miss the one that matters most.

  4. 4

Review it on the last day of the month

Drop the habit you never did, keep the ones that stuck, and add one new one at most. The next month’s page starts from that review.

If you already keep a bullet journal, the tracker belongs in it as the page after your monthly log; our guide to the bullet journal method shows where it sits and how the monthly review works. And if your habits sit alongside a weekly plan, our printable weekly planner has room for a weekly strip at the foot of the page.

Printing

Printing a habit tracker that fits your planner

Check the paper size before you print. Both of the trackers above are drawn for US Letter, 8.5 by 11 inches, and most free trackers are. Most of the world prints on A4, 210 by 297 mm, so a Letter file on A4 paper is either cropped at the edge or shrunk until the boxes are too small to fill neatly. If your tracker lives in an A5 binder or notebook, at 148 by 210 mm, a Letter page will not fit without scaling at all. Use a file drawn for your paper and print at 100 percent.

Keep the ink light. You print a habit tracker every month, and a page of thin lines and empty boxes costs almost nothing, while decorative backgrounds and colour-flooded headers use more ink than the grid itself. The colour belongs in the boxes you fill, not in the page you print.

Ours

The habit tracker set we are drawing

We are drawing a free habit tracker printable set with all four layouts: a monthly grid in ten-habit and twenty-habit versions, a weekly strip in Monday and Sunday starts, a 30-day page for one habit, and a year in pixels. Each comes in US Letter, A4 and A5 with a binder-safe margin, printed with hairlines rather than colour blocks. Beside it comes a paid habit and goals pack with twelve monthly trackers, quarterly reviews and goal pages. Both will be linked from this page when they are ready.

If you track on an e-ink tablet rather than paper, that version already exists: our habit tracker template is built for reMarkable, Kindle Scribe and Boox, and our guide to the digital habit tracker covers how to set one up. Every page built for paper will collect under printables.

Which habit has survived longest on your tracker, and which one never makes it past the first week? Tell us in the comments; it shapes which layouts we draw first.

FAQ

Common questions, answered briefly

What is a habit tracker printable?
A printed page with habits down the side and the days of the month across the top. You fill one box each day you do the habit, so the page shows what you actually did over the month.
How many habits should I track at once?
Three to five to start, even if the grid has room for twenty. A page full of habits you miss every day stops getting filled in. Add one new habit a month at most.
What should I do when I miss a day?
Leave the box empty and fill the next one. One miss is a day; two in a row starts a new pattern. Make the day after a miss the one you protect.
What paper size should I print a habit tracker on?
The size your printer and planner use. Most free trackers are US Letter, but most of the world prints on A4, and A5 binders need an A5 page. Use a file drawn for your paper and print at 100 percent.
Is a monthly or a weekly habit tracker better?
Monthly if you keep several steady habits and want to see the whole month at once. Weekly if you already plan week by week and want the tracker at the foot of your weekly page.

If yours isn’t above, drop the question in the comments and we’ll add it.
