What it is

Kindle Aluminum: price, colors and what you are buying

The Kindle Aluminum is not a new Kindle. It is the 2026 6-inch Kindle that Amazon put on sale on 1 October, wrapped in a metal back instead of plastic. Amazon’s launch page calls it “the 6-inch Kindle … available for the first time with an aluminum back” and sells it with 32 GB at $189.99 in two colors, Alpine Sky Aluminum and Seaglass Green Aluminum. The plastic version starts at $149.99 with 16 GB, in Ube (a purple) or Graphite.

So the question this page answers is a $40 one. The two readers share the same flush-front display, the same six-week battery figure and the same 30% faster book opening that Amazon quotes for the whole 2026 lineup. What the extra money changes is the thing in your hand, the storage, the lockscreen and the covers you can clip to it. Below is what each of those is worth, and the one case where neither Kindle is the right buy.

Amazon’s Kindle Aluminum listing sums it up as a pocketable Kindle with “aluminum back, 32GB storage, ad-free experience, and mag-attach accessory support”. Every claim in this piece comes from that listing and from Amazon’s own 2026 lineup announcement, both linked in the sources at the end. Where a figure comes from press measurements instead, we say so.

The $40

What the $40 actually buys

Four things, and none of them is on the page you read. First, the back: Amazon says the housing “is crafted from 80% recycled aluminum with a matte finish”, where the plastic Kindle’s housing “is made from recycled materials”. Second, storage: 32 GB against 16 GB. Third, ads: the aluminum Kindle is sold ad-free, so the lockscreen shows your book cover rather than a sponsored screensaver. Fourth, accessories: “for devices with aluminum housing, slim magnetic-attach covers are also available”, which the plastic model does not take.

2026 6-inch Kindle Kindle Kindle Aluminum
Price (Amazon, October 2026) from $149.99 $189.99
Storage 16 GB 32 GB
Back Recycled plastic 80% recycled aluminum, matte
Lockscreen Ads, or ad-free as a separate listing Ad-free
Covers Standard Kindle covers Slim magnetic-attach covers
Colors Ube, Graphite Alpine Sky, Seaglass Green
Display, battery, speed Same 6-inch flush-front display, up to 6 weeks, 30% faster book opening

The storage line matters less than it looks. A 16 GB Kindle holds thousands of books; 32 GB only earns its keep if you load audiobooks through Audible or read a lot of large illustrated files. The ad-free line matters more than it looks, because Amazon also sells the plastic Kindle “Without Lockscreen Ads” as its own listing, so part of the $40 is money you might have spent anyway. Amazon did not show us that listing’s price when we checked, so we are not quoting a delta; look at both listings side by side before you decide the metal is the expensive part.

What stays the same

The reading is identical, and that is the point

Amazon describes one 6-inch Kindle and two housings. The page, the front light, the processor and the software are the same reader whichever back you pick, so nothing about the Kindle Aluminum reads better. If you were hoping the metal model would be the Paperwhite-lite, it is not: the 2026 lineup page gives the 6-inch Kindle “up to 6 weeks of battery life” and lists neither waterproofing nor an adjustable warm light for it, while it lists both for the Paperwhite.

The one physical difference beyond the finish is weight. Good e-Reader’s launch-day report puts the plastic Kindle at 140 g and the aluminum one at 162 g, with both at 108.0 x 152.8 x 6.85 mm and 300 PPI. Those are press figures, not Amazon’s, and 22 g is roughly a AA battery, so the metal reader is heavier in the way a nicer pen is heavier: you notice it once and then you stop.

The $10 question

Kindle Aluminum vs Paperwhite: the $10 that changes the answer

Here is where most people should stop and reconsider. The 2026 Kindle Paperwhite is “available with 16 GB of storage in Graphite starting at $199.99”, ten dollars above the Kindle Aluminum. For that ten dollars Amazon lists a larger display (the largest Paperwhite display yet, in its words), “waterproof with an adjustable warm light for comfortable reading at any hour”, and “up to 12 weeks of battery life on a single charge”. That is double the battery and two features the 6-inch Kindle does not have at any price.

What the Paperwhite gives up is the pocket. The 6-inch Kindle is, in Amazon’s words, “the most pocket-sized Kindle we’ve ever made”, and a 7-inch-class reader is a jacket-pocket or bag device, not a jeans-pocket one. It also comes in Graphite only at that price, and it is plastic; the aluminum Paperwhite is the Signature Edition at $249.99, covered below.

The Kindle Aluminum is the plastic Kindle with a better back, double the storage, no lockscreen ads and magnetic covers, for $40. It reads exactly the same. The reading is identical

So the decision is not metal versus plastic. It is small-and-metal versus bigger-and-better-lit. If you read in bed and want the warm light, or in the bath, or you charge things as rarely as you can, the Paperwhite is the $10 well spent. If the whole appeal of the Kindle is that it disappears into a pocket, and you want the version that feels finished, the Kindle Aluminum is the only Kindle that gives you both.

The other metal Kindles

Every aluminum Kindle in the 2026 lineup

“Kindle Aluminum” is Amazon’s name for the 6-inch model only, but it is not the only metal Kindle this year. The Paperwhite Signature Edition “adds aluminum rear housing, 32 GB of storage, an auto-adjusting front light, pogo pin dock charging, and double tap to turn pages” at $249.99 in Graphite or Seaglass Green. The Colorsoft Signature Edition does the same for the color reader at $319.99 in Graphite or Fig. All three take the slim magnetic-attach covers.

Aluminum model Price Storage Colors Over the plastic version
Kindle Aluminum $189.99 32 GB Alpine Sky, Seaglass Green +$40: metal back, 32 GB, ad-free, mag-attach covers
Paperwhite Signature Edition $249.99 32 GB Graphite, Seaglass Green +$50: metal back, 32 GB, auto-adjusting light, dock charging, double tap
Colorsoft Signature Edition $319.99 32 GB Graphite, Fig Metal back, 32 GB, auto-adjusting light, dock charging, double tap

Read down the right-hand column and the pattern is clear: on the Paperwhite and Colorsoft, the metal comes bundled with real reading features (the light that adjusts itself, the dock). On the 6-inch Kindle it comes with storage and the ad-free lockscreen, and nothing that changes the page. That is why the Kindle Aluminum is the easiest of the three to talk yourself out of, and the one whose buyers are the most certain about why they want it. Our best Kindle 2026 guide ranks all seven models if you want the whole field on one page.

Who it suits

Who should buy the Kindle Aluminum, and who should not

Buy it if you want the smallest Kindle and you are going to look at it every day. The commuter who reads on a train, the traveller who wants one device in a coat pocket, the person replacing a 2024 Kindle who wants the upgrade to feel like one: for them the metal back and the clean lockscreen are the whole purchase, and $189.99 is not a lot for an object you handle for an hour a day for five years. It is also the gift Kindle, because it arrives looking like the price and nobody has to be told to pay to remove the ads.

Skip it if any of these is true. You read in the bath or by a pool: no waterproofing is stated for either 6-inch Kindle, and the Paperwhite is $10 away. You read in bed with the lights off and your eyes prefer a warm tone: same answer. You already own a 2024 Kindle and you are happy: the 2026 models changed the body and the speed, not the text. Or you want to write on the thing: no 6-inch Kindle takes a pen, and the Scribe is a different device at a different price.

If pocket size is the deciding factor and you are not wedded to Amazon’s store, our small e-reader guide sets the 6-inch Kindle against the Kobo Clara, the Boox Go 6 and the card-sized Picco and Xteink readers, several of which are cheaper than the plastic Kindle.

Reading or writing

If you also want to write on your Kindle

A fair number of people land on the Kindle Aluminum because it is the top small Kindle and then discover that the top of the small range, in Amazon’s lineup, does not come with a pen. Handwriting lives on the Kindle Scribe and Scribe Colorsoft, which are 10- and 11-inch devices built around a stylus. If the plan was a reader that also carries a planner or a notebook, the Scribe is the Kindle to compare, and the pages below are where we keep its planners.

For everyone else, the Kindle Aluminum is a reader, and a decision about how you want a reader to feel. Nothing on our Kindle pages will make it read better than the $149.99 one; what we can do is keep the prices on this page current as Amazon changes them, which it does more often than it announces.
