Which Kindle Scribe, which reMarkable

Most people searching Kindle Scribe vs reMarkable 2 are still comparing the pair that launched this question: Amazon’s first 10.2-inch Scribe against reMarkable’s 10.3-inch second tablet. Both sides have moved since. Amazon redesigned the Scribe around an 11-inch screen, a 5.4 mm body and 400 g, and now sells it in three versions. reMarkable stopped selling the reMarkable 2 new; it lives on as refurbished bundles, while the new Paper Pure took its place as the black-and-white model.

So the useful question is which of today’s devices you are actually choosing between. Here is every realistic pairing, with September 2026 prices.

The Kindle Scribe and reMarkable 2, side by side

On paper the two weigh the same and sit within a millimetre of each other in thickness. The differences that matter are the screen, the light and what each one reads. The Scribe’s 11-inch panel is the larger page, and the two dearer Scribe models add a front light the reMarkable 2 never had. reMarkable describes its tablet as having “no backlight, glare, or eye strain,” which is the same fact told as a feature: you need a lamp to use it at night.

Reading

Reading: the Kindle library decides most of it

The Scribe is a Kindle first. Books you buy or borrow from Amazon open on it directly, and documents arrive through Send to Kindle, Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive, with annotated PDFs exported back out. The reMarkable 2 has no bookstore at all. It opens the PDF and EPUB files you put on it through its desktop and phone apps or the Read on reMarkable plug-in, and it cannot open Kindle books, which is a wall, not a setting; our piece on whether the reMarkable 2 can read Kindle books covers the workarounds and why none are clean.

That makes the reading half of the decision close to binary. If your books live in a Kindle account, the Scribe is the device that reads them. If your reading is course packs, research papers, manuals or DRM-free EPUBs, the reMarkable 2 handles those as well as the Scribe does, and it lets you write anywhere on the page rather than in a margin note.

Writing

Writing: a notebook that reads vs a reader that writes

Both pens are the easy kind: neither needs charging. The Scribe’s pen attaches magnetically and comes in the box; the reMarkable 2 works with reMarkable’s Marker or the Marker Plus, which adds an eraser on the top end, and the refurbished bundles include one of them. Both screens are black and white, and both write in greyscale.

Where they differ is what the software is built around. The reMarkable 2 is a notebook with a reader attached. Its textured Canvas display, and tools like undo, move and layers, are the product; notebooks, folders and tags are the home screen. On-device handwriting to text is free, and the Connect subscription at $3.99 a month adds handwriting search and unlimited cloud storage, though the tablet works without it. The Scribe is a reader with a notebook attached: writing lives in its own notebooks section and as notes on book pages, and Amazon’s 2025 redesign added AI-powered search across what you have written. For long handwritten sessions, the reMarkable 2’s whole interface gets out of the way; for notes that sit next to your reading, the Scribe keeps them together.

Price

Price: what each one costs in September 2026

The reMarkable 2 is the cheaper way in, because it is only sold refurbished and every bundle includes a pen and a cover. The Scribe costs more, but its cheapest model is the one without a front light, which removes the Scribe’s main hardware advantage over the rM2. The front-lit Scribe starts $70 higher.

reMarkable’s refurbished store runs from $349 for the reMarkable 2 with the standard Marker and a Book Folio to $499 with the Marker Plus and the Type Folio keyboard. On the Amazon side, the 64 GB front-lit Scribe is $549.99 and the Colorsoft is $629.99. Those are Amazon’s own US list prices as of September 2026, and Amazon discounts them often, so check the listing on the day. The original 64 GB Scribe from the older 10.2-inch design is also still listed, at $449.99. If you would rather have a new reMarkable than a refurbished one, the Paper Pure is $399 with a Marker, which is within $31 of the cheapest Scribe.

Templates

Templates and PDFs: the same page fits both

One thing the spec sheets skip: both screens have the same shape. The reMarkable 2 is 1404 by 1872 pixels and the current Scribe is 1980 by 2640, and both work out to exactly 3:4. A planner or form cut for one opens on the other without letterboxing, stretching or cropping; it only scales. So a switch between the two, in either direction, does not strand the templates you already use.
