Why we have leap years at all
A leap year exists to keep the calendar lined up with the Earth’s trip around the sun. That orbit takes about 365.2422 days, not a tidy 365. Left uncorrected, the calendar would slide against the seasons by roughly a day every four years, and within a few centuries the summer months would drift into winter. Adding one day every four years (the 29th of February) absorbs almost all of that quarter-day slippage.
The century rule fine-tunes what is left over. Four quarter-days is not quite a whole day, so skipping the leap year in most century years, then keeping it every fourth century year, trims the tiny surplus. It is a small correction, but over hundreds of years it is what keeps the calendar honest.
