Size canon

What “fits the Paper Pro” actually means in pixels

The Paper Pro renders a working page at 1872 x 2404 pixels on an 11.8-inch CANVAS color panel, roughly 229 ppi. That is the canonical canvas for any template built native to the device. reMarkable Paper Pro templates that were drawn for the rM2 (1404 x 1872 at 226 ppi on a 10.3-inch screen) still load, but they render at a smaller working area with white margins around them, which is fine for a quick note and not fine for a planner you stare at every morning.

The fastest way to tell whether reMarkable Paper Pro templates are native or rM2 ports: drop them on the device and count pixels off a known reference. A native template fills the full screen edge-to-edge with no margin band. A ported one leaves a roughly half-inch border on all sides. That border is the rM2 page floating inside the larger Paper Pro canvas. For a deeper write-up of the math, our reMarkable 2 template size piece covers the rM2 dimensions and how they cascade.

Native canvas, Paper Pro vs rM2 Source: reMarkable spec sheet
Spec Paper Pro rM2 Notes
Working pixels 1872 x 2404 1404 x 1872 Portrait orientation
Pixel density 229 ppi 226 ppi Effectively identical
Screen size 11.8 in 10.3 in 1.5 in larger
Panel CANVAS color Mono e-ink 12-tone palette on Pro
Native aspect ratio ~3:4 ~3:4 Same ratio, bigger canvas

So reMarkable Paper Pro templates need to be drawn for the larger pixel count. The aspect ratio is unchanged, which is why old rM2 templates load but look small; the file is right-shaped, just under-sized. The other meaningful change is the panel: CANVAS handles colour at a 12-tone limit, which lets a template use red for urgent, green for done, blue for blocks, and so on without the workaround pattern fills that rM2 templates used.

One more nuance worth knowing: the Paper Pro’s pen offset is calibrated differently than the rM2’s. Templates that drew thin guide rules at exactly 1 pixel on rM2 sometimes ghost on Paper Pro because of the colour layer’s slightly different rasterisation. Native reMarkable Paper Pro templates use 1.5 or 2 pixel rules to compensate, which reads identically on screen and survives the colour-layer rendering without artefacts. Most template builders found this out the hard way during the Paper Pro’s first month and patched their files; the patched versions are what ships today.

Three reMarkable Paper Pro templates worth installing

The pool of reMarkable Paper Pro templates that actually fit the canvas is small. Three are worth the install time today: one from reMarkable’s own gallery (free, baseline), one Templacity bundle (paid, native-built), and one community pack on the rM forum that uses the colour palette properly.

1. reMarkable Methods gallery (free, baseline)

reMarkable ships about 50 first-party templates in the Methods gallery, accessible from the home screen via the Quick Sheets icon. The Paper Pro update added Paper Pro-native versions of the most-used ones (Lined, Dotted, Day Planner, Weekly, Storyboard). These are the right place to start because they are guaranteed-fit, ship with the OS, and were drawn for CANVAS at the right pixel count. The ceiling is that the Methods set is opinionated about layout (reMarkable’s house style) and limited in number; you will likely outgrow it within a month if you take notes daily.

2. Templacity Paper Pro bundle (paid, native build)

Disclosure: ours. The Templacity bundle ships about 40 reMarkable Paper Pro templates built native to the 1872 x 2404 canvas, with colour-coded sections that respect the 12-tone palette. Daily, weekly, monthly, project, meeting, reading log, and a handful of niche ones (Cornell, Sermon, Bullet). The bundle also includes the original rM2-sized files in case you carry both devices. Best fit if you want a one-purchase set that covers most everyday workflows without piecing together free templates of varying quality.

3. r/RemarkableTablet community pack (free, requires curation)

The reMarkable subreddit’s community templates thread has accumulated about 200 user-built files since the Paper Pro launched. The hit rate for “actually native, actually useful” is about 1 in 6, so plan on filtering. Worth the time if you want a niche template that the gallery sets do not cover (D&D character sheets, sheet-music staves at correct spacing, MELT framework for clinicians). Caveat: community files do not always declare their canvas size; check the dimensions before installing.

How reMarkable Paper Pro templates get onto the device

Three install paths exist depending on what you have access to. Each works; they differ in how many templates you can move at once.

i.

Per-notebook attach (no template list edit).

Open a notebook, tap the page menu, pick “Replace template” or “Change template” then upload your PDF. Works without dev mode; works with reMarkable Cloud sync. Right for trying one template, wrong for installing a set.

ii.

Cloud upload as document, then duplicate.

Upload the template as a regular PDF via the desktop or web app. On the device, open the file, duplicate it for each new notebook you want to start from that template. Works without dev mode, supports any quantity, but the templates live as documents rather than in the template picker.

iii.

SSH into the device and add to the template list.

For users who want their reMarkable Paper Pro templates to appear in the device’s template picker alongside the built-in ones, SSH access is required. The path is `/usr/share/remarkable/templates/` and the JSON manifest is at `/usr/share/remarkable/templates/templates.json`. Our install guide walks the steps.

Native reMarkable Paper Pro templates take a 1.5-second extra moment to load, but that moment is the device using its real canvas instead of a rM2 page floating inside it.What we found

DIY

When to make your own reMarkable Paper Pro templates

For about half the workflows we see, the right answer is none of the three picks above. It is to build your own template once, native, and use it for years. The time investment is real (about 2-4 hours for a clean planner template in Figma or Affinity Publisher) but pays off because the layout matches your actual practice rather than someone else’s house style.

The DIY case is strongest for three workflow types: domain-specific (sermon prep, design crit boards, sheet music, code review checklists) where no off-the-shelf template fits the field; idiosyncratic planners (someone who plans by energy level rather than time blocks, or someone running a non-standard week) where the published reMarkable Paper Pro templates assume a default rhythm that does not match; and minimalist setups where you want exactly four ruled lines and a date stamp and nothing else, which the gallery templates can never quite deliver because they are designed to be all things at once.

The DIY case is weakest when you mostly need standard daily/weekly/monthly views and a Cornell note page. For those, one of the three picks above already covers the territory, and the build hours are better spent on the actual work the templates are meant to serve. A useful rule of thumb: if you can describe the template you want with a published example URL, install that one. If you cannot, build it.

The two constraints to respect when building: stay at 1872 x 2404 pixels (export as PDF at 229 ppi, single page) and limit the colour palette to the 12 CANVAS tones (use reMarkable’s published palette swatch rather than full RGB, or accept that any out-of-gamut colours will dither). Our reMarkable template guide covers the build process for any rM device, including the Paper Pro specifics.

FAQ

Common questions, answered briefly

What is the correct reMarkable Paper Pro template size?
1872 x 2404 pixels in portrait orientation, at 229 ppi (which works out to roughly 8.17 x 10.50 inches on the 11.8-inch panel). PDFs exported at this exact pixel count fill the screen edge-to-edge with no margin band.
Will rM2 templates work on the Paper Pro?
They load and function, but render at the smaller rM2 canvas (1404 x 1872) inside the larger Paper Pro screen, leaving a ~half-inch white margin on all sides. Fine for casual notes; wastes the colour panel and the extra screen real estate for daily planners.
Does the Paper Pro support color in reMarkable Paper Pro templates?
Yes. The CANVAS panel renders 12 distinct tones (per reMarkable’s published palette). Native Paper Pro templates can use the palette for section dividers, highlights, urgency cues, and category coding. Out-of-gamut colours will dither but still render.
Can I install reMarkable Paper Pro templates without SSH access?
Yes, via two paths. Upload as a PDF document and duplicate (templates live as documents), or open a notebook and use “Replace template” per notebook. SSH is only required if you want templates to appear in the built-in template picker.
Are there free reMarkable Paper Pro templates worth installing?
Yes. reMarkable’s Methods gallery ships with about 50 native Paper Pro templates (Lined, Dotted, Day Planner, Weekly, Storyboard). The subreddit’s community thread has another roughly 30 worth installing if you filter for native-sized files. Both are free.
