The principle
How a holiday custody schedule works
A holiday custody schedule is the part of a parenting plan that says who has the children on specific days of the year, and it overrides the regular schedule for those days. Your week-on, week-off or 2-2-3 rotation carries on as normal until a listed holiday arrives, pauses for it, and picks up again afterwards. Without that rule, the holiday simply goes to whoever the regular rotation happens to land on, which is how one parent ends up with three Christmases in a row.
State court guidelines show the default shape. Indiana’s statewide Parenting Time Guidelines, for example, alternate most holidays between parents by odd and even years, split the Christmas break into two halves that swap each year, and the sample shared parenting plan in the same document opens its holiday section with the rule itself: “The below detailed holiday schedule overrides the above Regular Parenting Time Schedule.” Your own order is what controls, so treat any state’s default as a starting template rather than a rule that applies to you.
The options
Five ways to split a holiday
Almost every holiday custody schedule is built from five patterns, often mixed: one pattern for Thanksgiving, another for Christmas, a third for birthdays.
-
i.
Alternate by year
Most commonOne parent has the holiday in odd years, the other in even years. Simple to remember and fair over two years, but each child misses a parent on that day every other year.
-
ii.
Split the day
Morning with one parent, evening with the other, swapping each year. Both parents see the children every year, at the cost of a hand-off in the middle of the day.
-
iii.
Split the break in halves
For long school breaks: the first half to one parent, the second to the other, swapping each year. It is how Indiana’s guidelines handle the Christmas vacation.
-
iv.
Same parent every year
Fixed holidays that mean more to one side: Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are the obvious pair, and religious or cultural holidays often work this way.
-
v.
Attach it to the weekend
Monday holidays such as Memorial Day or Labor Day go to whoever has that weekend, so the long weekend stays in one house. Indiana’s sample plan does this for holidays that fall on a Friday or Monday.
The hard one
Christmas: Eve, Day and the break
Christmas is where vague schedules break, because it is three things at once: Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and a school break that can run two weeks. A good holiday custody schedule names all three separately.
Indiana’s version is a useful model for how precise to be. In the sample shared parenting plan within its guidelines, the children spend Christmas Eve, December 24, “from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.” with one parent and Christmas Day “from 9:00 p.m. on December 24 until 6:00 p.m. on December 25” with the other, swapping in odd and even years, and at 6 p.m. on 25 December the regular schedule resumes. In the main guidelines, the break itself is split into halves that also swap. Every boundary has a time on it, which is exactly what removes the argument.
Every boundary has a time on it, which is exactly what removes the argument.
Then decide what happens to New Year. Indiana does not treat New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day as separate holidays, so they fall inside whichever half of the break covers them. If New Year matters in your family, list it on its own.
The calendar
Holiday dates for 2026 and 2027
Floating holidays are the ones that catch people out, because the date moves while the order says “Thanksgiving”. These are the dates for the next twelve months, with the weekday, which is what decides the hand-off.
| Holiday | Date | Weekday |
|---|---|---|
| Halloween | 31 Oct 2026 | Saturday |
| Thanksgiving | 26 Nov 2026 | Thursday |
| Christmas Eve | 24 Dec 2026 | Thursday |
| New Year’s Day | 1 Jan 2027 | Friday |
| Easter | 28 Mar 2027 | Sunday |
| Mother’s Day | 9 May 2027 | Sunday |
| Memorial Day | 31 May 2027 | Monday |
| Father’s Day | 20 Jun 2027 | Sunday |
| Fourth of July | 4 Jul 2027 | Sunday |
| Labor Day | 6 Sep 2027 | Monday |
Two things in that table deserve a look now. 2026 is an even year, so if your order alternates by odd and even years, check which parent “even” means before November. And Christmas Eve 2026 is a Thursday: if your regular schedule has a Friday hand-off, write down whether the holiday starts Thursday morning or waits for Friday.
The writing
Writing a holiday schedule that holds up
Most holiday disputes are about the edges, not the holiday. Settle these six in writing, and the plan mostly runs itself. Exact start and end times for each holiday, not “the day”. Who drives, and where the hand-off happens. What “school break” means when the two schools’ calendars differ. What happens to the regular weekend that falls inside a holiday, and whether it is made up later. How travel out of state is handled, and how much notice it needs. And which holidays beyond the standard list your family keeps, since Indiana’s guidelines say religious holidays “shall be considered by the parties” and added where appropriate.
If you are drafting from scratch, our parenting plan template has a holiday section built around exactly these questions, and the custody schedule template lets you lay the holidays over your regular rotation so the clashes show up before December rather than in it. Agreed changes are worth recording as they happen; a co-parenting communication log keeps the “you said we could swap” conversations in one place.
None of this replaces your order or a family lawyer. If your plan already sets a holiday schedule, that is what applies, and changes to a court order usually need either written agreement or the court. What a clear schedule does is make the agreement easy to keep.
A holiday custody schedule works when every holiday has a pattern, every boundary has a time, and both homes have the same calendar. If you have found a split that works for your family, especially across a long drive, share it in the comments; the best patterns usually come from parents who have already lived through a few Decembers.
