What size should your PDF be for an e-ink tablet?

Almost every e-ink writing tablet is exactly 3:4. A4 is 1:1.414 and US Letter is 1:1.294. Neither is 3:4, which is why a normal page leaves bars on your screen. Below is the exact page size for every device, and a checker that tells you what your own file will do.

Nothing is uploaded. The checker reads your file inside your browser and it never leaves the device you are sitting at. No email, no account, no limits.

Why no standard paper size fits any of them

Width divided by height. A 3:4 screen is 0.7500. Nothing in common use is close enough to avoid bars.

PageSize (pt)RatioOn a 3:4 screen
A4 595.28 x 841.89 0.7071 5.7% of the screen wasted
US Letter 612 x 792 0.7727 2.9% of the screen wasted
A5 419.53 x 595.28 0.7048 6.0% of the screen wasted
US Legal 612 x 1008 0.6071 19.0% of the screen wasted
A 3:4 page the sizes above 0.7500 Nothing wasted. Fits edge to edge.
[the checker]

Drop in a PDF. See exactly how it lands.

Your file is read in this browser tab and never sent anywhere. We look at the page box, compare it to the screen you pick, and draw the result at true proportions.

How your reader shows it

A single blank page at the exact size for the device above, with the safe margins marked. Use it as a canvas in any design tool.

reMarkable 2

Pick a device and drop a file in. Until then, here is what the empty screen is shaped like.

[method]

How we get these numbers.

The arithmetic

Screen pixels divided by pixel density gives inches. Inches times 72 gives PDF points, times 25.4 gives millimetres. Every derived figure in the table is computed from the panel spec rather than typed in by hand, and each row’s diagonal is checked back against the maker’s marketed figure.

Points, not pixels

We publish the physical page, so 12pt type measures 12pt on the actual glass. You can instead build a page whose point dimensions equal the pixel count, which some people prefer for aligning hairlines to exact pixels, but it makes every font size in the document read about four times too large. Both are in the data if you want them.

Where it comes from

No manufacturer publishes a template size specification. Not reMarkable, not Supernote, not Boox, not Amazon. So every number in circulation is third party, including ours. Each row names its source and the date we last checked it, and says whether it is a maker figure or a community measurement.

The raw data

Free to use, quote and build on. If you want the table as JSON rather than HTML, it is at /wp-json/templacity/v1/devices. A credit link back here is welcome but not required.

[questions]

The questions people actually ask.

What size should a PDF be for an e-ink tablet?
Take the screen resolution in pixels, divide by the pixel density, and multiply by 72. That gives a page in PDF points that lands 1:1 on the glass. For a reMarkable 2 that is 447.29 x 596.39 pt; for a Kindle Scribe, 446.4 x 595.2 pt; for a Supernote Manta, 460.8 x 614.4 pt. The table above has every device we know of.
Why does my A4 planner leave white bars on my tablet?
Because A4 is not the shape of your screen. Your reader fits the whole page on screen, so any difference in proportion becomes empty space. A4 is narrower than a 3:4 screen (0.7071 against 0.7500), so it fits by height and the bars appear down the left and right. US Letter is the opposite: slightly wider than 3:4, so it fits by width and the bars appear along the top and bottom. Nothing is broken; the page is simply the wrong shape.
Is A4 or US Letter better for an e-ink tablet?
US Letter, slightly, which surprises most people. On a 3:4 screen A4 wastes about 5.7% of the display and US Letter about 2.9%, because Letter is closer to 3:4 than A4 is. Neither is as good as a page built at the device size, which wastes nothing at all.
Is every e-ink tablet the same shape?
Very nearly. The reMarkable 2 and Paper Pro, all three Kindle Scribe generations, the Supernote Manta and Nomad, and the Boox Note Air, Note Max and Go lines are all exactly 3:4 in portrait. The reMarkable Paper Pro Move is the mainstream exception at 9:16, and iPads are taller than 3:4.
Can I use the same PDF on two different devices?
If both are 3:4, yes, and it will fit edge to edge on both. The physical size differs, so the type will be larger on a 13.3 inch Note Max than on a 7.8 inch Nomad, but nothing crops or letterboxes. Moving a file to or from a Paper Pro Move is the case where it will not fit, because that device is a different shape.
Should I size my PDF in points or in pixels?
Points, in almost every case. A page built at the physical size means 12pt type measures 12pt on the real screen. Building a page whose point dimensions equal the pixel count is only worth it if you are aligning hairlines to exact device pixels, and it makes every font size in your document about four times larger than it reads.
Do the Supernote Nomad and reMarkable 2 take the same file?
They have the identical 1404 x 1872 pixel grid, but at 300 and 226 ppi respectively, so the correct pages are 336.96 x 449.28 pt and 447.29 x 596.39 pt. Both are 3:4, so either file fits either screen without cropping. The difference shows up in physical scale, not in fit.
Why do the hyperlinks in my planner not work?
On reMarkable, link taps register from a finger rather than from the pen. The links are in the file and they do work; they just need a fingertip rather than the stylus you are already holding. On Kindle Scribe, tap with a fingertip too. If a link still does not move you, tell us your firmware version and we will look at it.
Where do these numbers come from?
The pixel and density figures come from each maker's published specifications, and every derived figure (points, millimetres, aspect) is computed from them rather than typed by hand. Each row carries its source and the date we last checked it. No manufacturer publishes a template size specification, which is why this table exists.
